National Theater Of The Republic Of Srpska

The National Theater of the Republika Srpska in Banja Luka was founded on September 2, 1930 as the "National Theater of Vrbaska Banovina" and since then it has been an important carrier of the development of dramatic art.

The theater building from 1934 is a representative public building, stylistically determined by Bauhaus elements, but retaining some features of neoclassicism. Extending on the longer sides to two streets - King Petar I Karađorđević Street, the former Tsarski Road, and the street that today bears Milosavljvić's name - the theater building is a kind of corner. Its angular character is not emphasized, since the central facade is covered on the sides by semicircular segments that soften the angular characteristic of the building's disposition. The sides have, characteristic for modern architecture, vertical accents, while the wall canvas is divided by simple rows of windows on the ground floor and first floor, the horizontal of which balances with the vertical over the side entrances. The most noticeable elements of classicism – the portico on fluted columns and the gable above it – give representativeness to the main entrance on the front. The eclecticism is rounded off by the application of folklore motifs on reliefs placed in rectangular fields symmetrically on both sides of the entrance. Hiring Dragutin Inkiostri for the creation of these reliefs, Ban Milosavljević remained consistent with the principle applied in the construction of public buildings in Banja Luka since the time of the Cathedral, the principle of selecting eminent artists as a guarantee for the quality of commissioned work.
